“Bloody hell, it’s COLD!” Joe Gullotta, 11.08.19
At approximately 6am on this particular Sunday, my mother Lorella checked the forecast and saw it was snowing. It’s safe to say there was no sleeping in.
We made our way to Katoomba where the quaint little mountain town was covered in falling snow. No cafes being open yet, we decided to suppress our Italian thirst for coffee and continue to Black Heath. Along the drive the snowfall intensified - a magic I had almost forgotten. Arriving finally, we were met with a fairy-tale scene of icing-dusted trees. The wild greenery now coated in brilliant white, as if wearing it like fabric.
After two hours of exploring this ethereally rare state of the Blue Mountains, we made our way back to wander through Katoomba Street. Antiques, hatters and bakeries galore, we ended up at The Yellow Deli - a mouth-watering cafe run by international cult, The Twelve Tribes. The interior is straight out of the mind of Tolkien; a Middle-Earth meets Brother’s Grimm scene serving the most delicious Hot Apple Cider you will ever have. Each table is named of Biblical fruitfulness - love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness and so forth. It’s certainly one-of-a-kind with food that is worthy of its own cult-following and make sure to book ahead because you won’t want to miss it.
Before heading home I had to galavant through Katoomba’s Street Art Walk. Both local and national artists have lended their talents to this open-air museum, sprawled across the old-timey brick buildings. I jumped into every scene I could conjure along this strip, including that of an abandoned couch nestled among wild vines. It may not have technically been a part of the art, but damn it was cool.
